Position Summary

The Senior Accountant position is responsible for working in partnership with the CFO and Controller on the daily management of the financial functions of the Museum including accounting, financial reporting, budget preparation, tax and audit activities of the organization. In addition, the Senior Accountant is responsible for record keeping and management of donor funds as it pertains to the Museum’s capital campaign. The Senior Accountant is self-motivated; able to work independently; provide leadership when necessary; multitask and meet deadlines.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for tracking and ensuring accurate recording of the Museum’s capital campaign revenue and expenses.
  • Works with the Development department to gather donor pledges and documentation for capital campaign contributions.
  • Works collaboratively with Development department responding to grant proposals.
  • Responsible for entering the Museum’s annual budget into the accounting system.
  • Distributes monthly departmental expenditures reports to department managers.
  • Assists with ensuring an accurate and timely monthly and year-end close.
  • Assists with preparation, including account confirmations and collection of fieldwork items, during the Museum’s annual financial audit.
  • Assists with monitoring departmental expenses compared to budget.
  • Responds to Support Organization’s inquiries regarding their revenue and expenses.
  • Assists with the management of the Museum’s independent contractor agreements.
  • Reviews Accounts Payable invoices for proper documentation, approvals and accurate coding.
  • Responds to staff members inquiries regarding purchase orders, check requests and expense reports.
  • Reviews Accounts Payable batches before posting to the general ledger.
  • Reviews Cash Receipts for proper documentation and accurate coding.
  • Follow up with other departments regarding payment discrepancies and inquiries.
  • Assist with reviewing employee timesheets and payroll register prior to submitting for processing, when necessary.
  • Assist with ensuring accurate employee payroll and benefit changes within the payroll and benefit systems, when necessary.
  • Responsible for processing Accounts Payable, Cash Receipts and Payroll, when necessary.
  • Assume other responsibilities as assigned.

Physical Demands

  • 60-80% time spent sitting at the computer.
  • Some carrying and lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Daily walking required to the Museum, which includes stairs.

Work Environment

  • Office space shared.
  • Noise level ranges from quiet to moderately noisy.

Salary Range: $75,000 to $80,000 annually

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance required.
  • Minimum of 4 to 7 years of relevant experience.
  • CPA preferred.
  • MBA in Finance or Accounting preferred.
  • Experience working in nonprofit and MIP Fund Accounting desired.
  • Experience with Capital Campaigns desired.
  • Experience working on grant proposals and reporting a plus.
  • Vendor and Independent Contractor Agreements.

Required Skills

  • Knowledgeable in Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Experience with financial software.
  • Candidate must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and possess strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team in a fast-paced and high-volume work environment.
  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure in order to meet deadlines.
